Remote Mining Operation Goes Off-Grid with Field Gas

A remote mine was burning diesel at enormous logistics cost. Defiant built an islandable natural-gas microgrid using on-site gas wells, eliminating diesel deliveries entirely.

The Challenge

A remote extraction site relied entirely on diesel generators, requiring constant fuel deliveries over a seasonal ice road at extreme cost and risk. The operator had on-site gas wells but no way to convert them to reliable prime power.

Our Approach

Defiant engineered a 6.3 MW islandable microgrid of PrimeCore modules running directly on treated well gas, with onboard master sync and auto-paralleling. The microgrid controller balances load across modules and sheds non-critical loads automatically if a block trips.

Results

Diesel deliveries to the site dropped to zero within the first quarter. The project eliminated the ice-road fuel logistics risk and cut levelized energy cost by an estimated 41%.
